Andrea-
I love that you focus on Love as one of the needs your students have. In my experience, The “L” word had been frowned upon in the educational setting. It had been suggested that we could frame it as “unconditional regard” yet for some reason to LOVE would be crossing a boundary. Keep the LOVE flowing! YES!!!
I also appreciate your focus on the skill of “Pausing”. Taking the pause is such vital step toward peace, both internal and external. What a beautiful skill for all of your students to witness, so nourishing for everyone.
February 27, 2024 at 1:27 pm #98531.) I have an amazing group of 3rd graders (19 of them!) who learn great in a multiple of ways. Our largest struggle is being in control of our body and following simple directions.
2.) They need hands-on practice with gross motor activities that allow them to follow directions and build these lacking life skills.
3.) I can power their great love for learning and shift it into some more hands on activities that they really take ownership of. When children feel connected with ownership they are more likely to take focus and care for the outcome of their work.

I love that we are on this journey together. I am really curious how we could incorporate these skills and strategies into our staff meetings and professional development days!

I too love to motivate my students to speak up for what they know to be right or wrong. I often see where students witness a negative behavior and worry they will be looked down on if they speak up for themselves. Then they end up going along with the negative behavior. Not all adults can relate to this and unfortunately I have witnessed the student trying to speak up reprimanded and made to feel as if they were the one doing the wrong.

Your school is lucky to have a leader that wants to learn alongside your teachers to acquire similar information that you can use to make your school community a more positive place in which to learn and grow. Allowing children to speak up for themselves in a polite and respectful manner can move mountains. I also love that you focused on love. If we cannot use the term “love” perse, we certainly can embrace the feeling that being loved leaves upon us all. I am also hopeful that we will empower our students to learn real world ways in which to feel grounded, centered and ready to learn through managing their own feelings in a positive way with adult role models doing the same!

Your grandbabie(s) and your students are certainly lucky to have you in their lives. Your long weekend retreats sound glorious and I imagine you are giving your students tangible experiences in which to grow themselves and use as they learn to be practitioners. I can envision you also sharing your garden and tea when you and your partner host your students. What a wonderful addition to your current practices!March 2, 2024 at 3:24 pm #9859Tiffany,
I can envision your students taking ownership over growing and designing a garden in a manner that empowers them to follow directions in order to participate. I also can imagine that the tactile feeling of holding a warm mug/cup of tea will be very calming and healing to our students who otherwise perhaps don’t have the opportunity to “feel” comfort. Any extra calming tools that we can give children in the world right now makes me happy and gives me hope and inspiration that they too will be valued and loved.

So wonderful to see the two of you teaming on this initiative together. I love knowing the children and faculty in your school are receiving support to gain such a vital life skill that not only demonstrates learning standards yet it also gets everyone outside tending to the earth and nourishing their spirits! so wonderful. I am imaging your school garden now, what a gift to everyone in your school community!
