Use the herbal actions list and the video as a reference point to answer this question: What two herbal actions are you most interested in exploring for yourself, in your body over the next few weeks? Take a few sentences to a paragraph to describe why for each action.
Please write in your journal and upload a photo of it, or type it out in a doc. Upload your document to the student assignment folder.

Herbal Action InterestsI am intrigued by each of the herbal actions and could see spending lifetimes learning more, ahh the wonder and mystery of Science – aka Magic! I love it. I’m struggling to narrow my interest to only two so I will list the four that I am most drawn to and I am open to suggestions for how best to narrow my focus for this course.
I am curious about Alteratives given they appear to provide support at the cellular level. l have managed living with cancer since the age of ten. I most recently finished an eleven week round of chemo-therapy on January 1st of this new year. Given I have periods of my life where I am exposing my body to poison, I am drawn to the actions of: detoxification, blood cleansing (Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is a blood disorder), and I would like to restore vitality.
Adaptogens & Nervines also interest me for the ability to help my body manage and heal from stress and worry. I also wish to restore and maintain balance. Prior to the medication my body ‘readies’ for the moment. I felt tense, on guard, hyper-vigilant and couldn’t sleep. My nervous system is still unwinding from the treatments. I have incorporated Cordyceps from North Spore, and I take the De-stress vitamins from Ollie that have Gaba, Ashwagandha, L-theanine and Lemon Balm. The vitamins really helped with the build up of anxiety each day prior to the chemo dosing. I have continued taking them and find them helpful.
*** My daily prayer and mediation practice also supports my nervous system greatly.. I have a strong faith, not specific to a religion, more specific to a strong connection with spirit. I would love to learn more about herbal actions connected to supporting spiritual connection. I currently smudge with Palo Santo, Cedar, Rosemary and Lavender. Im curious to connect with herbal teas and or smoke medicine/smudge that are in alignment with my Celtic and or French Canadian heritage.Anti-inflammatory: My body is my oldest and truest friend and we have been through a lot together. We live with daily pain and tiredness as a result. I go to PT regularly and strive to eat a very clean diet. I have to be careful with how much exercise I do and I almost always feel exhausted rather than rejuvenated after vigorous “work outs”. I actually hate “working out” yet I find long walks and hikes in the woods with my dogs and partner to be rejuvenating and I wish to maintain strength and longevity so I can play outside and in the woods with my grandson… soon to be two of them!
Antioxidants: This area I have more familiarity with on a conceptual basis, for example, I grow blueberries and raspberries for my “antioxidants” and Im prescribed very high doses of B3 yet now I’m thinking that might be an alterative – because it is for cellular turn over… ????
My ultimate goasl: longevity, balance, strength and vitality. Not too much to ask for 🙂
March 3, 2024 at 4:44 pm #9862I am really interested in anti inflammatory relief. I am constantly stiff upon waking and during the day I hold stress in my shoulders and neck. I am not great at incorporating herbs into my diet so I am really interested in finding the easiest and most effective ways for me to increase that in my daily practice. I also imagine that a combination of nutritional wellness in terms of what to eat and when would be extremely beneficial. I tend to make fairly healthy food choices but honestly my social media feed is constantly filled with “how-to’s” for good health. It is overwhelming when I see one thing that states “bananas are bad…” and “eating all those vegetables are not great for your gut health…”. What?!?! I also know that everything you read on the internet is not helpful or true!! lol
I have been consulting a naturopath since 2020. She was able, through a blood test, to determine that I have a severe intolerance for eggs and a lesser but problematic intolerance for dairy. I have recognized that I feel lethargic and have stomach pain after eating gluten. I am interested in aiding in digestion. I also suffer from chronic constipation and have found some relief using magnesium malate, but I have not been able to dose myself appropriately and I go from nothing to being in the bathroom multiple times daily. I think I am interested in carminative digestion aid.
March 3, 2024 at 4:46 pm #9863Kelly- When you wrote “My body is my oldest and truest friend and we have been through a lot together” I was really connecting to this sentiment. Think about the body and mind connection over the course of your whole life. What power to be the most intimate partner! And…sometimes this leads to utter frustration because it seems I should always know what to eat, how to move, when to rest and how to recharge and alas, I don’t seem to do it all that well and my daily activities suffer. I, like you, hope to learn so much more to increase my ability to heal and mend my aging body!
March 7, 2024 at 7:35 am #9870Veronica,
I see you! Inflammation relief and maintaining gut health can feel like a full time job and very overwhelming as we navigating the maze of what we can and can not eat. I too have been confused and frustrated with contradictory information coming from medical & healing practitioners. Finding someone who is willing and able to help put all of the pieces together in an integrative way can really help, I hope you are finding your nature path to be of support, finding the right guide is like finding the right pair of shoes for a long hike. One of my teachers once said to me “Kelly, there is more than one way to climb the mountain, the key is that you keep climbing. Do it your way and Keep Climbing”. Im so glad you are finding ways so that you can feel more comfortable as you keep climbing! Thank you for sharing your journey. 🙂
